  Fled Germany in 1934, went to Paris, studied economics, worked for the League of Nations. On the outbreak of war, volunteered for service in the French Army, until the fall of France in June of 1940. In September, through intervention by professors at the University of California and the Rockefeller Foundation, he got a visa as a political refugee.
