2008 Spring into the Arts Cast
EMME, MISTRESS OF CEREMONIES: Emme, the supermodel,
television personality, best-selling author, lecturer,
clothing designer, and women’s advocate has a clear
mission: to awaken the inner magnificence inherent in each
of us. It’s no wonder People magazine selected her twice as
one of the "50 Most Beautiful People" and Ladies’ Home
Journal chose her as one of the "Most Important Women in
America" She also was honored as a Glamour magazine "Woman
of the Year”.
Emme burst onto the scene as the world’s first full-figured
supermodel and, as host of E! Entertainment Television’s
"Fashion Emergency", she quickly became a popular icon.
Most recently, she was seen on ABC’s Good Morning America,
NBC’s Today Show, CBS’s The Early Show, Oprah, CNN’s
American Morning, 20/20, Entertainment Tonight, The
Insider, and as guest host of the Joan Hamburg Show on WOR
Radio.
A best selling author, Emme chronicled her extraordinary
life and rise to success in her first book, True Beauty.
Emme then shared her passionate perspective on life when
she penned her second book entitled Life’s Little
Emergencies. What Are You Hungry For? is a newly released
children’s book that addresses the reality that children
have many hungers, including emotional ones. She currently
posts on her Simply Green with Emme blog on iVillage.com,
discussing her commitment to the green movement from the
perspective of a multi-tasking mom.
Emme is a vocal advocate for people of all ages to be fit
and to live a healthy lifestyle while simultaneously
combating societal and peer pressure to be something other
than what comes naturally. She promotes and exemplifies a
wellness lifestyle, positive body image and self-esteem and
self-acceptance as a sought after keynote speaker. She
lectures at prestigious universities including Yale,
Harvard, and NYU as well as high schools around the
country. A cancer survivor, Emme is vocal about the need to
advocate for oneself when dealing with issues of health.
Emme serves in more ways than one. She is the Chair
Ambassador of the National Eating Disorders Association
(NEDA), is on the advisory boards of Ophelia’s Place
(Syracuse New York’s eating disorder resource), Hearts of
Gold (enhancing the lives of New York City’s homeless women
and children), Safe Horizon Champions for Children (moving
victims of violence from crisis to confidence), Ethosquare
(a new online media environment) and is an Ambassador for
the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Born in New York City, Emme was raised in Saudi Arabia and
returned to the US as a teenager. Syracuse University
awarded Emme a full athletic scholarship where she excelled
both academically, earning a degree in speech
communications, and as a member of the crew team. Emme was
invited to the US Olympic Team trials, as well as several
US National Team trials. She was later inducted into the
Syracuse University Orange Plus Hall of Fame for her
significant contribution to women's athletics and to the
sport of rowing. After graduation, she spent two years in
Flagstaff, AZ where she was a reporter and morning anchor
for the NBC affiliate KNAZ-TV.
Emme and her daughter reside in Northern New Jersey with
their pet gold fish, Goldie.
5th AND 6th GRADE TEEN ARTS: Two competitive dance teams
supervised by Paula Cummings at Closter’s Tenakill Middle
School. Students audition in front of professional judges
for a place on a team. The teams perform in the annual
Dance Fusion show and represent Closter at competition.
This year the 5th & 6th grade team won 1st place in a
prop division at Eastern Cheer & Dance Association’s
Regional Competition. Diane Lockhart assisted Paula
Cummings this year.
KING LAI CULTURAL DANCE THEATRE represented by Closter
resident, Cian Ma, and Jackie Sung will do “Flight to the
Heavens”. Formed in January 1995, with seven talented
students, the group grew in number rapidly. Characterized
by discipline and hard work, students became transformed
into artists and performers, demonstrating skills of poise,
grace, and artistic expression and range in age from
grammar school to professional women. Our major goal is to
share the arts and richness of the Chinese culture with the
community. With the addition of the syllabus training, the
dramatic expressions and technique required in forms of
classical and folk dance has been enhanced and refined.
Performing frequently with professional and
semi-professional dance ensembles, most students have been
exposed to being “on the road”. One of the delightful
aspects of our students’ training is that each and every
one can discover hidden talents that are used throughout
their lives.
THE DOLAN SISTERS: Closter residents Colleen, Meghan and
Kadie have been performing competitive Irish dance for most
of their lives! They have won many competitions (too many
to mention!). Most recently, Meghan placed 2nd in the Irish
Step Regional Championships in PA. 2007.
DANCE FUSION: Each year approximately 130 dancers
participate in a large dance club at Closter’s Tenakill
Middle School co-directed by Diane Lockhart and Paula
Cummings. Professional and high school artists are invited
to choreograph dance pieces that include hip hop, jazz,
stomp, tap, Broadway, traditional cultural dance, lyrical,
break dancing, ballet. Rehearsals and performances are held
each fall. Dance Fusion won the “Best Practice” award from
the State Department of Education, 2002 - 2003.
7th AND 8th GRADE TEEN ARTS: Two competitive dance teams
supervised by Paula Cummings at Closter’s Tenakill Middle
School. Students audition in front of professional judges
for a place on a team. The teams perform in the annual
Dance Fusion show and represent Closter at competition.
This year the 7th & 8th graders took two 2nd place
finishes, one in jazz and one in hip hop. Diane Lockhart
assisted Paula Cummings this year.
BREAKIN’ BOYS: A Closter dance crew put together and
choreographed by the boy’s themselves. Most of the boys
perform at the Tenakill School Dance Fusion show and have
attended battles in New York City.
KINESIS: A modern dance group from Northern Valley Regional
High School-Demarest. An auditioned group of dancer’s who
choreograph, teach, learn and perform dance under the
guidance of Jolyann Schoeppler. This year they will perform
in their annual show at the High School on April 30th &
May 1st. They also participate in the Bergen County Teen
Arts Festival. In the past, the troupe has traveled to Walt
Disney World in Florida to perform.
EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD: Mina Belfert and Alfred Lockhart
belong to competitive dance groups traveling throughout the
US to perform. Alfred appeared in the 2006/7 performance of

TERRY THIRY, COSTUME DESIGNER: Terry Thiry began sewing as
a child under the patient eye of her mother. There was no
starting off slow with an A-line skirt, it was straight to
a blazer made out of circus quilt material with buttons
that looked like clown noses. She went on to make prom
dresses, bride’s maids gowns and Halloween costumes; but is
was when she mentioned that she knew how to sew while
getting measured for a costume at a local community theater
company that her costuming career began. Terry is currently
the resident costume designer at The Garage Theatre Group.
She has worked locally with The Bergen County Players, The
New Benefit Theatre, Clarkstown Summer Theater Festival,
Suffern High School and Rockland Community College. The
gowns on display today were designed for a recent
production of “The Secret Garden” at The Bergen County
Academies. They were inspired by the Edwardian period
fashions of the early 1900’s, and were created by combining
pre-made pieces, and in many cases, draping them directly
on the actresses to create these wonderful, eclectic looks.
